Data comes from GDELT, which reads news articles around the clock. A protest the media barely covered may be missing.

A protest is estimated by grouping, for one place, reports from the same day and of the same type: the press often describes a single rally in several articles. Reliability combines the diversity of outlets (45%), GDELT's confidence in extracting the event from each article (35%) and the share of reports taken from the opening of articles (20%).
